The Optimal Momentum Map

چکیده
The presence of symmetries in a Hamiltonian system usually implies the existence of conservation laws that are represented mathematically in terms of the dynamical preservation of the level sets of a momentum mapping. The symplectic or Marsden–Weinstein reduction procedure takes advantage of this and associates to the original system a new Hamiltonian system with fewer degrees of freedom. However, in a large number of situations, this standard approach does not work or is not efficient enough, in the sense that it does not use all the information encoded in the symmetry of the system. In this work, a new momentum map will be defined that is capable of overcoming most of the problems encountered in the traditional approach.

There exist three main approaches to reduction associated to canonical Lie group actions on a symplectic manifold, namely, foliation reduction, introduced by Cartan, Marsden-Weinstein reduction, and optimal reduction, introduced by the authors. When the action is free, proper, and admits a momentum map these three approaches coincide. The goal of this paper is to study the general case of a sym...

We generalize various symplectic reduction techniques of Marsden, Weinstein, Sjamaar, Bates, Lerman, Marle, Kazhdan, Kostant, and Sternberg to the context of the optimal momentum map. We see that, even though all those reduction procedures had been designed to deal with canonical actions on symplectic manifolds in the presence of a momentum map, our construction allows the construction of sympl...

Several aspects of Dirac reduction are compared and formulated from the same geometric point of view. A link with nonholonomic reduction is found. The theory of optimal momentum maps and reduction is extended from the category of Poisson manifolds to that of closed Dirac manifolds. An optimal reduction method for a class of nonholonomic systems is formulated. Several examples are studied in det...

متن کاملMomentum Maps and Morita Equivalence
We introduce quasi-symplectic groupoids and explain their relation with momentum map theories. This approach enables us to unify into a single framework various momentum map theories, including ordinary Hamiltonian G-spaces, Lu’s momentum maps of Poisson group actions, and the group-valued momentum maps of Alekseev–Malkin–Meinrenken. More precisely, we carry out the following program: (1) We de...
